Prowein 2018: The Vinitaly of Germany

I myself have never been to Prowein, but I have been to Vinitaly and I imagine it’s very similar. Basically too many wineries to count get together and show their wines to the people in the trade; which means you have to be a member of the trade to get access. Now, I am not sure how loose the definition of trade is, so you might get access if you can somehow make it sound like you are in the trade. When I went to Vinitaly, a friend gave me her second pass, so that’s how I was able to attend. I know, lucky me!

Anyways, the fair is from March 18 – March 20 and some of the winemakers I know that will attend are:

Corino, Altare, Fratelli Revello, Carlo Revello , Burlotto, Cavallotto, Marengo and Mauro Veglio.

Barolo Night 2.0

Barolo Nigth 2.0 – Oslo

At the beginning of the year I was in Gothenburg for what I like to call Barolo Night. 6 people, 10 barolo, lots of fun. Now it’s time for Barolo Night 2.0, except this time it will be in Oslo. The deal is the same: everyone brings a barolo (or three) and we taste it blind! Below is the lineup from Gothenburg.

Barolo & Friends at Territoriet

Every year during the Barolo & Friends wine event in Oslo, Territoriet arranges a wine event as well. That means that you can get a hold of good quality Barolo that normally isn’t on the wine list. Last time I attended Chiara Boschis and Claudia Cigliuti came to the event, so you could taste their wines and chat with them, a rare opportunity in Oslo!

Femmes Fatales

This year Riikka, a finnish woman who lives in Serralunga, came to Territoriet after the wine tasting. She works for the Winery Malvira but also produces some wine in her own cellar. A very interesting and talented woman! I will try to visit her during my next trip to Piemonte!

Territoriet is one of my favorite places to drink wine as they have a HUGE selection of wines by the glass! Few places have the same options. Despite this being a Barolo event I drank mostly white burgundy the whole night – oops!

Help: How would you run a wine class?

Wine class: how to do it?

So, I am organizing a wine class (on Piemonte/Barolo) for some friends and guess who will be the teacher? That’s right, it’s me! Now, I know a thing or two about wine but I have never taught what resembles a class so I am asking your advice: How do I do it?

Here are some of my ideas:

  • Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo and Barolo next to each other
  • Different Barolo crus next to each other
  • Nebbiolo and Barolo and maybe a barolo cru

I will also probably have some maps and a book to explain.

What do you guys think?

Alessandro Veglio in Oslo

Alessandro Veglio Winemakers Dinner

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend Alessandro Veglio’s winemakers dinner in Oslo last week. The dinner was hosted at Kulinarisk Akademi at Mathallen, a very nice location in the city of Oslo. As you can see we were seated right by the open kitchen which gave us the unique possibility to see the preparation of the food by the incredible chef Marius (also pictured below),

We were served a multitude of dishes: pasta, risotto, cod, lamb, ragu and dessert. All very good and served beautifully. And the food of course went very well with the wine. Alessandro had brought his dolcetto, barbera, lanhe nebbiolo, barolo classico (2012 and 2009) and the Gattera. I think the Gattera was the favorite of the night, although for me of course way too young. I really enjoyed his Langhe Nebbiolo (as always)!

I have to give a shout out to the wonderful team at Winning Brands, Alessandro’s importer, for organizing such a great event. And of course Kulinarisk Akademi for hosting us. Milan Food Week

So, apparently there is Milan Food Week starting on Thursday! And what is Milan Food Week? I am not completely sure, but there seems to be food involved. And according to their website (which unfortunately is only in Italian) there  are a few events around town.

It’s an 8 day event starting May 4th. There is a sort of “headquarters” at Spazio Bergognone 26, where there should be quite a few things to do and see. And you can sign up for different events on their website: http://www.milanofoodweek.com/

 

Vinitaly 2017

Ok. I am not sure where to start. This may be the most insane wine event I have ever attended. There is just miles and miles of wine. I spent 5 hours there and I didn’t even get to see all the wineries in the Piemonte hall that I wanted to see. For the first 30 minutes I just wandered around, trying to get a lay of the land. If I go another time I will definitely do some more research and plan ahead. I would also like to stay more then 1 day, as 1 day is definitely not enough. Every summer the town of Barolo hosts a music festival in its city center. They have pretty impressive lineups; last year Sting performed, and this year Robbie Williams will perform.

If you are in the area around the 16th and 17th of July, check it out!
