Happy birthday, dad!

It’s that time of year again. Pylsa & Barolo. Hot dogs and red wine.

Pylsa & Barolo 2018 went off without a hitch and as you can see we drank some good wines. We started the night off with champagne from Pierre Peters (a bubbly that even I enjoy) and moved into 2011 barolo while eating hot dogs flown in from Idsøe in Stavanger.

2011 is supposed to be a very approachable vintage now, but for me it is still too young. We all know I prefer older barolo. Unfortunately I did not make it to all of the wines as many disappeared long before they reached my table. But some of my favorites include Vietti Castiglione, Marengo Brunate and Bartolo Mascarello. I had some Altare Cerretta, and although this is a very good wine, for me it is a little too masculine and should have stayed in the cellar another decade.

Pylsa & Barolo 2017

Every year for his birthday, my dad throws a BBQ by the name of “Pylsa & Barolo”. This way he can celebrate his birthday with his friends without making it an official birthday. This year was special because he turned 50! He decided to fly down his closest friends and family to celebrate in Barolo! We invaded La Morra and occupied all of Corte Gondina. Many events were scheduled, but the main event that started the whole thing is Pylsa & Barolo. Below are some photos of the event. You’ll find the wine lineup at the end!

Wine of the Week

This past week was a little special, because my dad (Signor Tony) turned 50! The wine consumption was slightly higher than usual, as you can see in the foto below, and the wines were incredible. This picture is from the “infamous” Pylsa & Barolo, which was located in Barolo this year. And another special feature this year was the bottles: all magnum!

Every year we have an event called “Pylsa & Barolo”. The event is in reality my fathers birthday celebration, but he doesn’t like to celebrate his birthday, so he organizes a garden party instead. The whole concept is that we serve different kinds of Hot Dogs with Barolo as the wine pairing. It is a strange combination but somehow it just works.

This year’s lineup was composed of what we call “family wine”. Over the years we have made many friends in Barolo, and some of these winemakers have become part of the family along the way. Bartolo Mascarello has always been a favorite, and we are a big fan of Maria Teresa and Alan. If we are having #family wine” Altare has to be on the list. Not only have I worked at the winery, they are our oldest friends in Barolo. Their neighbors, Mauro Veglio are also considered part of the family. Daniela and Mauro are wonderful. Last but not least there is Vietti. Luca and Elena are a riot and I always feel at home with them. My favorite thing to do with them is to sit around their dining table, listening to the family while drinking wine and eating home made food. I wish they could all have been there yesterday but at least I will see them all in July!
