Piemontefestival

Barolo and Friends had another great event in Oslo, this time it was a Piemonte Festival at Nedre Foss Gård. Some wine producers joined us, like Roberto from Malvira, so I got to practice my italian! I had the opportunity to try over 80 wines (but I didn’t, because we all know I don’t spit).

Piemontefestival Malvira

My favorite “stand” was Malvira; mostly because he was so much fun to talk to. I had never tried the Malvira wines before, and I know very little about Roero, so it was a very educational evening.

Roberto Damonte runs the winery with his brother Massimo. Massimo is responsible for the vineyards, while Roberto works in the cellar. The winery started production in 1950, and now makes over 20 wines.

There was a contest where you could win a 2 night stay in Piemonte. The one who picked the lucky winner was Daniele Manzone, the director of I Vini Del Piemonte, who also helped organize the event.

Barolo Night 3.0 Round 3

Continuing the tasting notes from Barolo Night 3.0.

barolo night sthlm round 3

Renato Ratti Rocche 2011

Clear red color. This wine had a strange smell. Some dill on the nose. The taste was also a bit strange. Not my favorite wine of the night.

Mauro Veglio Gattera 2006

Color a little rusty, but clear. On the nose there were earthy tones, rose hip and some truffel. In the mouth it was quite tannic, with some truffel. Too young, but very good!

Burzi Capalot 2013

Rusty, dark red color. Licorcie, salt and sweet notes on the nose. Quite tannic, evident that it was young. And as it turned out it was very young!!

Barolo Night 3.0 Round 2

Check out these three wines from round 2 at Barolo Night 3.0. Keep in mind we tasted them all blind.

barolo night sthlm round 2

Altare Barolo 1993

Dark, rusty color. On the nose a little bit of toffee, sweet, red berries, truffel. In the mouth the wine was soft, but with tannins present. Impressive for a wine with that age!

Aldo Contero 2006

This wine was “donated” by Toni (my dad). On the nose there was mostly rosehip. This wine was more tannic than the first wine.

Gianni Voerzio la serra 1999

Dark, rusty red color. On the nose hints of toffee and licorice. Mouth had a sweetness, some toffee. I liked this wine a lot.

Sandefjord Vinfestival

Sandefjord Vinfestival

This weekend I attended Sandefjord Vinfestival. This year the overarching theme was South-Africa, but my good friend Alessandro Veglio was there as well. And a bottle of Vietti Moscato. The festival takes place every year in Sandefjord, and many cool wineries and wines are represented. Even though I normally stick to Piemonte, I tried a few South-African wines. Jamie Goode was also in attendance, and he held a presentation during the festival.

Sandefjord Vinfestival Veglio Lineup

Here you can see the corner I spent most of my time in. Forgot to get a good picture of Alessandro, but I’ll just try again next year. I also met many familiar faces at the festival – many I met for the first time face to face. Looking forward to next year already!

Barolo Night 3.0 Round 1

barolo night sthlm round 1Voerzio la serra 1998

Dark brown, sort of old color. On the nose there were cherries, some toffee, raspberries. Despite the age there were still tannins present, albeit not forceful ones. I liked this one a lot!

Massolino Margheria 2008

On the nose there was a sweetness, rose hip, berries. A little dry in the mouth and we could tell there was some age to it. For me it had very masculine tendencies, very typical of the Massolino wines. All in all, very good. And 2008 is in general very approachable now.

Renato Corino Arborina 2014

Very interesting to see this baby next to the older wines. On the nose there was a nice smell of roses and rose hip. Compared to the other wines this had a lot of tannins, but still very approachable. Looking forward to try more 2014 in the upcoming weeks.

Barolo Night Stockholm Edition

Barolo Night 3.0

We are continuing the success of Barolo Night, this time destionation: Stockholm!

As per usual, we start the weekend with Friday Pizza and some “low key” wines. As you can see in the picture below the “low key” wines are quickly escalating! We did blind tasting Friday as well – because why not?? For me Wine of the Night was the Voerzio barbera, which is strange because his wine are normally not my taste. Vietti at a close second, but who are we kidding: all the wines are good!

Saturday went a little crazy – look at that lineup! Double blind tasting, as in we didn’t know which wines were which when we were tasting, not even our own. Super interesting both to compare the ones in each round but also comparing them all at the end. More detailed notes will follow!

Wines Round 2 Barolo Night

Barolo Night Oslo Round 2

The lineup for the first 6 wines is not bad. (hehe) Keep in mind we did these wines blind, 3 at a time, so the tasting notes reflect what was tasted at the time.

Barolo Night Oslo Lineup 6 wines

Aldo Conterno Ciacala 1999

Earth tones and toffee on the nose. Older, caramelized, earthy.

Aldo Conterno Ciacala 2012

Floral notes, leather, red berries. Lots of tannins, fruity in the mouth.

Palladino 2010

Strange. To me it did not taste like a wine from Piemonte.

This round the “winner” was definitely the 1999 Aldo Conterno. Everyone knows I like old Barolo, and this one was no exception.

Barolo Night 2.0

A few weeks ago, Barolo Night 2.0 took place in Oslo. Overall there were 9 wines, tasted in 3 rounds and here are some tasting notes on the first round. Round 2 and 3 to come!

Barolo Night Oslo

Mauro Molino Vigna Gancia 2008

Reddish brown. Flowers and dark berries on the nose. Round tannins, long finish

Enzoboglietti Riserva 2004

Reddish brown. Earth tones, leather, dark berries and dill on the nose. Tannins present, fruity.

Mauro Sebaste Prapo 2011

Reddish brown. Some petroleum on the nose. A little thin, tannins present.

In this round I was surprised by the Mauro Molino and the Enzoboglietti. Tobias (@tobias_wineandfood) loves Molino and is trying to make me love it too. And he’s not far away from his goal. Enzoboglietti was so impressive that I decided to visit them when I was in Piemonte in March. When it comes to the Mauro Sebaste I was not that impressed with the wine, nor had I heard of it before. Maybe I will learn more about it in the future, but your now I am sticking with the wines I already know and love.

#BaroloNightOslo

Barolo Night Oslo

Remember the Barolo Night I had in Sweden? This weekend was Barolo Night 2.0 Oslo edition! Oh man did we drink some good wines. The layout of these Barolo Weekends are starting to form, and so on Friday we eat pizza and drink Pizza Wines. Check out these amazing Pizza Wines in the picture below.

Friday lineup

Represented in the first night were some amazing producers: Rinaldi, Alessandro Veglio, Vietti, Bartolo Mascarello and Azelia. And we hit all the typical Piemonte/Barolo categories: Dolcetto, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo.

Barolo Night Oslo 2

Saturday is the big wine tasting night, with blind tasting and tasting sheets. This time it was 9 wines and 4 people – maybe a tad much but we went with it. We do 3 and 3 wines at a time, taking time to smell and taste and discuss before we reveal. And once we are through all the wines, we just drink and enjoy.

Barolo Night Oslo

Below are the wines of Barolo Night 2.0. More detailed description and tasting notes will follow, but for now just enjoy the view!
