Prowein 2018

Prowein 2018: The Vinitaly of Germany

I myself have never been to Prowein, but I have been to Vinitaly and I imagine it’s very similar. Basically too many wineries to count get together and show their wines to the people in the trade; which means you have to be a member of the trade to get access. Now, I am not sure how loose the definition of trade is, so you might get access if you can somehow make it sound like you are in the trade. When I went to Vinitaly, a friend gave me her second pass, so that’s how I was able to attend. I know, lucky me!

Anyways, the fair is from March 18 – March 20 and some of the winemakers I know that will attend are:

Corino, Altare, Fratelli Revello, Carlo Revello , Burlotto, Cavallotto, Marengo and Mauro Veglio.

Check the Prowein website for more info.

Wine Night at Cascina Nuova

Wine Night a la Piemontegirl

Remember I asked you for advice on how to run a Wine Tasting? Well, here is how it went!

Wine Night 3

My very talented friend Elena Baseotto made me some tasting sheets, and I decided to go for 3 wines next to each other: dolcetto, barbera and nebbiolo. The knowledge level among the participants varied a lot, so this was a nice way to show them the different grapes and their characteristics.

I chose a dolcetto from Andrea Oberto, a barbera from Burlotto and a langhe nebbiolo from Trediberri. These 3 producers are different yet they share the same philosophy (and are people I care about). It was very interesting to see which wines the guests preferred and why. I like all three, but in very different ways. Dolcetto is very easy to drink, not a lot of structure, but very pleasant. Barbera tends to be bigger (in comparison to dolcetto) and tastes better with food (in my opinion). And langhe nebbiolo is tannin free and smooth, yet has more structure than the dolcetto. All in all good wines to try.

Wine Night 1

I think maybe next time I will do a comparison of the same type of wine but either from different producers or different cru. I think it is interesting to see the different producers interpretation of the wine. Any thougths?

Wine Night 4

Vinmonopolet: Wines 255kr and under

Good selections for a reasonable price

There are quite a few wines available at Vinmonopolet, andyou can find some great wines at reasonable prices. (Although that’s not always the case). Sometimes there are so many options that it’s hard to know what to buy. And if you don’t know the wines or the wine maker it can be difficult to know exactly what you are getting.

In any event, I have listed some wines that I think highly of and that as of now are available. However, bear in mind that most of these wines have to be ordered, as in they are not usually in the stores.

Here are the wines:

Oddero Barbera d’Alba, 245kr

Burlotto Barbera d’Alba, 255kr

Alessandro Veglio Langhe Nebbiolo, 250kr

Cavallotto Langhe Nebbiolo, 255kr

Vietti Perbacco, 250kr

Palm trees – Which Barolo Winemaker is known for them?

Which winemaker in Barolo grows palm trees?

I bet you didn’t know that Burlotto grows palm trees as well as grapes. If you get to visit his winery in Verduno, maybe he’ll show you. You can see some of them from the street, including the beautiful big one pictured below. It’s funny to me that almost all the winemakers have their own “thing”. Elio makes sausage, Corino has geese – I wonder what other winemakers are hiding behind their winemaking skills.

If you hadn’t heard about the palm trees, you have probably heard about his wines. In one word – incredible. He recently received 100 points by Galloni for his Barolo Monivgliero 2013, which is a pretty big deal in the wine world. Anyways, if you visit him maybe he’ll tell you about his other hobby and show you his amazing collection of trees (along with his wines of course).

100 points

img_9715First of, huge congratulations to my friend Fabio on receiving 100 points from Antonio Galloni on his 2013 Monvigliero. Having been a big fan of Fabio and his wines for a while, I am not surprised he received a top score for his wine. When I was in Barolo recently, coincidentally the day after the review came out, I went to visit Fabio. And I was fortunate enough to try the 100 point wine, Monvigliero 2013. Now, I always think it’s difficult to drink young Barolo’s with pleasure. But aside from that, the wine was really good. In Galloni’s own words: But the Monvigliero, well, it enters the realm of the deeply moving. It is a wine that will leave readers weak at the knees.” You can read the review on http://vinous.com/, but I think you might need an account to read the full articles.
