Mangialonga 2018

Have you ever been to Mangialonga?

If not, you should! I mean, a day of food, wine and beautiful landscape – who can say no to that?

ja

I’ve mentioned Mangialonga before, but basically it’s just a walk where you stop along the way to eat and drink. You work your way through the courses and grapes: dolcetto, barbera, nebbiolo and barolo. It’s a day to have lots of fun, eat and drink until you fall asleep (preferably not during the course, although some have been known to take a nap or two).

I recommend taking the trip – I know I am going! Hopefully I’ll see some of you there. I’ll probably be at one of the stands, so if you’re there this year, please come say hello!

What were the favorite wines?

In a weekend with A LOT of good wines, there are bound to be a few favorites! I enjoyed most of the wines, but like always there are ones you love and ones you maybe don’t like as much. For me round 4, the last round, was the best one. The Veglio 1997 and Altare 1996 were by far my favorite – we all know how I LOVE old barolo!

Meeting Giovanni Corino’s geese

This was a very strange but fun experience. Those geese were crazy, but they loved Giovanni. FYI I did not pet the goose. Not even close.

Barolo Night 3.0 Round 4

Did we subconsciously save the best for last?

barolo night sthlm round 4

Mauro Veglio Rocche 1997

Color was dark brown, rusty. On the nose there were notes of toffee, sweet and some fruit This wine tasted a little strange to me, not quite sure what it was. For most of the other wine tasters it was fantastic.

Altare 1996

Rusty color, evident it was old. On the nose there were hints of mushroom, earth and forest. The taste was absolute heaven! Most likely a barolo, as you can see from the label but not 100% sure.

Pizza Wine

Tignanello – why we call it the Pizza Wine

IMG_8591Maybe you’ve heard me say that I am having Pizza Wine with my Friday Pizza? Well, there’s a story behind the concept.

Normally, a “pizza wine” would be a dolcett, barbera or a langhe nebbiolo. Something light to have with your pizza, nothing super fancy or expensive. But we sometimes refer to the Tignanello wine as a Pizza Wine – why?

Some friends of mine were having dinner and drinking wines (some really good wines). Among those wines was the Tignanello, and compared to the other wines present it was quite “simple”. (Yes I know Tignanello is a very good wine with a very good reputation, but keep in mind the context). Anyway, after having had some truly amazing wines they opened the Tignanello, and it was clear they all struggled to sort of “place it” compared to the other ones. So one of the guys said: “You know, this wine is a great Pizza Wine”.

And thus it was forever known as “The Pizza Wine”.

Have you ever heard of the grape Pelaverga?

Burlotto Pelaverga

Pelaverga is a very special grape that is indigenous to Verduno in Piemonte. There are not that many winemakers that make wine with the pelaverga grape (I don’t think I have tried any other pelaverga wines) but I really like the one Burlotto makes.
