Ever heard of the Cedar Tree?

tbt cedar treeLocated in the backyard of Cordero di Montezemolo, you find this beautiful cedar tree. It was planted as a wedding gift in 1856 by the family, the heirs of Cordero di Montezemolo.

The tradition these days is to hug the tree, and of course we did exactly that. Maybe you want to try the next time you are in the area?IMG_2978

Winemakers

We all know I love wine. But I think it is very important to remember and recognize the people who make the wine. It’s those people who make the decisions and take care of the grapes that eventually becomes the wine we drink.

One of my favorite things to do is to talk to the winemakers. Listen to their stories. Learn from them. Most of them love telling you about their wines and wine making in general. Often my winery visits are more about the kids and the dog than the wines. I can drink most of the wines at home but rarely get the chance to talk to the people who make it. It’s something I look forward too all year, my summer trip to Piemonte.

Top 5 Wine Experiences in Oslo

  1. Territoriet
  2. Le Benjamin
  3. Beijing Palace
  4. Cru
  5. Dr. Kneipp

Territoriet

Did you say wine by the glass? Because at Territoriet you can get over 100 wines by the glass! The bar, located at Grünerløkke, is small and cozy, with excellent staff and many good wines. I personally think they have a very good selection of white burgundy, one of the many reasons why I tend to end up here on the weekends.

Le Benjamin

This cozy bistro is worth a visit or two. They have a very good wine list, excellent food and wonderful staff. Located in a very nice are in Oslo, this french gem invites you in and makes you never want to leave.

Beijing Palace

Hmmm, where to begin? This interesting joint is a must when dining out in Oslo. Along a busy street behind a rugged exterior is probably Oslo’s best Chinese restaurant. But the most intriguing aspect of Beijing palace is it’s extensive wine list. You may not thing dumplings and red burgundy go together, but this place makes it happen!

Cru

This is a restaurant I “frequent”. I absolutely love spending time here. Max, the owner, is so down to earth and friendly, and will gladly chat about food, wine or life while you drink wine and eat his delicious food. The staff is knowledgable, fun and kind and will make your dining experience fun and relaxed. It feels a bit like coming home, apart from the obvious higher standard of cooking.

Dr. Kneipp

Very cool. The place is separated into a restaurant and a wine bar. The wine bar is kind if dark, with booths as well as some tables scattered around. There are many wine bottles lined up behind the bar, and their wine list is incredible. They have quite a few gems by the glass, which makes this perfect if you just want a glass or two. I will definitely come back here.

“Now that the Baroloboys have grown up, time may have come for us, the Barologirls.” – Giulia Negri

negri

Last summer I was in La Morra with my family and we went to visit Giulia Negri, aslo known as Barologirl. Giulia is a friend of mine but I had never before been to her winery. We sat in the garden, drank wine and ate salumi, while playing with the dogs and learning about their wines.

Giulia is young and she has a passion for Pinot Noir and Burgundy. She makes her own Pinot Noir wine and it’s quite good! Their winery makes two separate wines, Giulia Negri and Serradenari. Giulia’s mother also makes wine at the winery.

Check out both the wineries at www.giulianegri.com and www.serradenari.com.

Riccardo Sgarra with Paolo Scavino

When I was a student in Boston, I tried to go to as many wine tastings as I could. At a Vineyard Road tasting I ran into Riccardo who works at Paolo Scavino. It is always a pleasure when someone who works at the winery or makes the wine comes to the tastings. It makes it a lot more personal. I met Riccardo again when I was in Barolo last summer, he gave me a tour of the winery and then we tasted some wines. They were as good as I remember.

You can check out their wines here.

Piemontegirl is going to Bourgogne

It is true I have a soft spot for Italy and the Barolo region, but I also really like Burgundy. I am going to Beaune this summer, hopefully visiting a few wineries and eating lots of good food. I really wanted to visit Marc Colin but it is proving to be very difficult. IMG_2805

When I was in Burgundy last time we visited Matrot and Liger-Belair. I have previously tried Matrot’s wines but not Liger-Belair. The tasting experience with LM Liger-Belair was incredible. LM is a really interesting guy and his passion for wine is very contagious. The whole tasting was done out of the barrels in the cellar and I had the pleasure of trying his white wine that was only a project at the time. It is now for sale and I frequently drink it at Territoriet in Oslo.

This year I hope to visit LM again, but other winemakers are on the list as well. It would be great to visit Matrot again, Elsa and Adele are always a treat. My parents also met some winemakers at a wine tasting so maybe we will go to one of their wineries.

It should be a fun trip no matter what, and Beaune is such a beautiful town. I can’t wait to wander around the town, visit the wine shops and have a glass of wine at one of the restaurants along the streets. Hopefully I’ll buy a bottle or two to bring back home. Or maybe 10.
