Corte Gondina – The Place to Stay

Corte Gondina – A Home Away From Home

Corte Gondina – A beautiful boutique hotel in La Morra.

Corte Gondina Living Room

If you ever find yourself in Piemonte, I highly recommend Corte Gondina in La Morra. This should come as no surprise for those who know me, as I frequent the beautiful hotel in the main streets of La Morra. Although there are many wonderful places to stay in La Morra, this has to be my favorite.

Corte Gondina

Bruno and his wife Elena will welcome you with open arms and treat you like family from day 1. Jackie, the gorgeous german/italian wonder maks a killer cappcino for breakfast in the morning and make sure the garden looks spick and span. All of these things make for a nice hotel experience. And don’t get me started on the breakfast pastries!

In the winter you can sit in the living room and sip a glass of wine in the comfy armchairs and in the summer you can enjoy a chilled glass of white wine under the olive tree. If I ever get married and have a wedding, this is where it will be! You better get ready Bruno!

Accomasso – The Man, The Myth, The Legend

Accomasso? I honestly don’t believe it. The whole thing was like a dream. A bizarre, wonderful, unexpected dream. Do you know about Accomasso? If you do, then you’ve probably heard rumors about what he’s like. And let me tell you: they are true.

Accomasso winery

Here is how it went down

Let me take you back 2 weeks. I contacted my good friend Emanuela (who works at the Cantina Communale in La Morra) and I asked her if it was possible to get a visit with Accomasso. Her response: let’s try. So Friday after lunch 2 weeks later we drove up to his house with our fingers crossed. This lovely lady was running around in the garden chasing a cat around, a cat that was harassing Romeo (Accomasso’s cat). Anyway, she led us into the house and up to the second floor. Emanuela looks at me and I can tell that this is not the way to the winery. And boy was I right. All of a sudden I found myself in Accomasso’s kitchen.

1991 in Acomasso’s kitchen?

Lorenzo Accomasso was relaxing on his couch in the kitchen, having a chat with Renato Corino. He was suprised to see me, just like I was not expecting to see him. “Ciao Bionda” he says, like always, and exchanges a few words with Renzo in Piemontese before he leaves us. The lady who had brought us into the kitchen gestured for us to have a seat at his kitchen table. And guess what was right in front of me? A barolo 1991 from Accomasso. Something was said that I didn’t understand and a few moments later I was drinking this amazing wine from 1991.

Accomasso 1991 barolo

This has to be one of the strangest winery visits I have ever had. After about 10 minutes I hear him asking something like “Who is that blonde girl that you brought?”. Finally, I get to introduce myself! I don’t speak Piemontese and he doesn’t really understand my broken Italian so Emanuela translates. This goes on for a while. I just sit there drinking my wine.

Accomasso

Want to know how this picture came about? He saw my camera and asked about it and Emanuela told him I was hoping for a picture (because HELLO, I wanted to document this moment). He then disappeared for a long time and when he came out he had changed his clothes, put on a coat and hat and announced he was ready for the photoshoot!

Best. Visit. Ever.

Thank you Renzo. Thank you lovely lady whose name I never got. And thank you Emanuela. I will NEVER forget this.

Wines round 1 Barolo Night Oslo Edition

Barolo Night 2.0

A few weeks ago, Barolo Night 2.0 took place in Oslo. Overall there were 9 wines, tasted in 3 rounds and here are some tasting notes on the first round. Round 2 and 3 to come!

Barolo Night Oslo

Mauro Molino Vigna Gancia 2008

Reddish brown. Flowers and dark berries on the nose. Round tannins, long finish

Enzoboglietti Riserva 2004

Reddish brown. Earth tones, leather, dark berries and dill on the nose. Tannins present, fruity.

Mauro Sebaste Prapo 2011

Reddish brown. Some petroleum on the nose. A little thin, tannins present.

In this round I was surprised by the Mauro Molino and the Enzoboglietti. Tobias (@tobias_wineandfood) loves Molino and is trying to make me love it too. And he’s not far away from his goal. Enzoboglietti was so impressive that I decided to visit them when I was in Piemonte in March. When it comes to the Mauro Sebaste I was not that impressed with the wine, nor had I heard of it before. Maybe I will learn more about it in the future, but your now I am sticking with the wines I already know and love.

Winery Wednesday

Aurelio Settimo

During my visit to Piemonte this time around I decided to visit a few new wineries. Aurelio Settimo was one of them. The winery started making their own wine in the 1950’s, after having been farmers for decades.

Today, the winery is run by Tiziana, the daugther of Aurelio, and the philosophy of the winery is to focus on quality while keeping with tradition.

Aurelio Settimo 2

Aurelio Settimo only produces red wine and among those is the Rocche dell’Annunziata.

The winemaking follows the traditional method with big botti and no toast. The majority of the grapes are nebbiolo, 5.7 hectares and the rest is dolcetto, about 1 hectars.

Aurelio Settimo

During my visit I tasted 6 wines, a wonderful lineup. First up the dolcetto, one of my favorite grapes! Then Langhe Nebbiolo followed by 4 Barolo’s. I was lucky enough to taste their Rocche Riserva 2009 and Rocche 2005.

If you want to visit the winery or learn more, you can go to their website.

Save the date!

Barolo Night Oslo

Remember the Barolo Night I had in Sweden? This weekend was Barolo Night 2.0 Oslo edition! Oh man did we drink some good wines. The layout of these Barolo Weekends are starting to form, and so on Friday we eat pizza and drink Pizza Wines. Check out these amazing Pizza Wines in the picture below.

Friday lineup

Represented in the first night were some amazing producers: Rinaldi, Alessandro Veglio, Vietti, Bartolo Mascarello and Azelia. And we hit all the typical Piemonte/Barolo categories: Dolcetto, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo.

Barolo Night Oslo 2

Saturday is the big wine tasting night, with blind tasting and tasting sheets. This time it was 9 wines and 4 people – maybe a tad much but we went with it. We do 3 and 3 wines at a time, taking time to smell and taste and discuss before we reveal. And once we are through all the wines, we just drink and enjoy.

Barolo Night Oslo

Below are the wines of Barolo Night 2.0. More detailed description and tasting notes will follow, but for now just enjoy the view!
